October 2024: Rewriting my own post
Last year, Jess wrote a post for Warp about Poetry, the Python package and dependency manager. According to Warp staff, as of September 2024, it’s still one of the most-read pieces on their blog.
Despite the outward success, we’re not thrilled with the writing. Many of the sentences are flabby.
So this month, we’ll rewrite parts of it to show how sentences can be tightened.
Opening: Paragraph 1
Most of these edits are straightforward cuts to shorten length.
One artistic choice: we swapped in “Perhaps” to improve consonance with all the other “P” sounds.
“If you and Python go way back” is shorter but more casual. We think that’s ok here, because it fits the overall tone of the piece.
